Sciatica refers to pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which branches from the lower back to the hips and buttocks and along each leg. Sciatica affects only one side of the body. Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disc, a spinal column in the spine, or a narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compresses part of the nerve. This leads to inflammation, pain and often numbness in the affected leg. Although pain associated with sciatic pain can be severe, most cases of non-surgical treatment disappear within a few weeks. People with severe sciatica who have severe leg weakness or bowel or bladder changes may be eligible for surgery.

Mostly it affects only one side of the body. Main factors of this pain are herniated disk, narrowing of the spine, or nerve compression. The major associated signs are

• Inflammation
• Pain from low back to buttock and the back of your thigh and calf
• Numbness in leg
• Discomfort along the nerve pathway

For complete treatment medicines like anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and narcotics with proper physical therapy are recommended. If these things make a no difference surgery is recommended.
