Pakistan’s rice export to China crossed $277.56 million during the first five months of Financial Year 2021-2022, up 9.73% year on year.
The official data from the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) revealed that Pakistan remained one of the key broken rice suppliers to China.
Pakistan Embassy in Beijing Commercial Counsellor Badaruz Zaman stated that at present broken rice, particularly Irri-6, Irri-9, and semi or wholly milled rice are the major varieties exported to China; however traders still need to work hard to grab the Chinese market for Basmati and other top varieties.
“Last year, China imported 973,000 tons of rice worth $437 million from Pakistan. Seven new rice exporters of Pakistan have been added to the approved list, which has risen to 53,” Zaman said, adding, “China relaxed import restrictions on Pakistani rice, which helped increase export to China.”

Badaruz Zaman is hopeful that within a few years Pakistan will become the leading rice exporter to China.
Moreover, in April, Pakistan’s rice exports increased by 3.9% to $132.59 million during the first two months of this twelve months, based on China Customs.
During the period of the first two months (Jan-Feb) of 2022, bilateral trade elevated significantly and China imported greater than 347,434 tons of different types of rice, rising 18% by quantity and growing to $132.5 million in price, while it was 294,240 tons price $127.61 million in the final 12 months during the same interval.
In this regard, Zaman stated, “I hope this 12 months Pakistan will obtain the goal of 1 million tons of rice export to China and inside just a few years, Pakistan would be the largest rice exporter within the Chinese language market”.
“I feel the Chinese language seed and know-how, particularly color sorter machines, helped improve the export of Pakistani rice to China,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Shamsul Islam Khan who is the former vice-chairman of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Trade (KCCI) underlined that the “cause for the rise of rice export to China is that there isn’t any quota system utilized to damaged rice and the responsibility is 10%, whereas Chinese language hybrid seed elevated the manufacturing and cultivation right here”.
