Good news for dental and medical college candidates as colleges across Pakistan have decided to relax their admission criteria for the upcoming academic year.
According to the new rules after the relaxation of criteria for admissions, the candidate must obtain at least 33 percent marks in the entry tests to be considered for admission — half of the 66 percent minimum score required previously. The change in relaxation policy does not end here, leniency in the requirements for appearing in the entry tests is also applied, permitting students who have obtained 65 percent marks in the Intermediate science group annual examinations to sit for the test. Last year, only students who had obtained 70 percent or higher in these examinations were allowed to take the entry tests.
Medical colleges relax admission criteria because due to the maximum requirement last year, the admission process in many medical and dental colleges could not be completed. The government of Balochistan raised objection to the 70 percent criteria which were set by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
Moreover, the Balochistan government claimed to be an underdeveloped province due to which many students do not have many resources to studies and they hardly obtain 70 percent marks, it called for a relaxation in the criteria policy and therefore the PMDC decided to lower its criteria.

The written entry tests for medical and dental programmes will be held from September 15 to October 15, with every province bound to organize the test within this time period, as per the notification by PMDC.
However, the Intermediate examinations could not be held this year and results are to be issued without the usual examinations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The results for Grade 11 and 12 students would be announced on 30th September, decided in the meeting of the provincial education department’s steering committee last week.
