car sales

The automobile industry’s sales volume increased dramatically in December 2021, owing to expected price increases on a range of vehicles. While Toyota Indus Motor Company (IMC) has trailed marginally month over month (MoM), all other members of the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) have seen record car sales.

According to PAMA data from December 2021, the auto sector increased monthly sales with a total of 27,331 units sold, a 46 percent increase month over month (MoM) and a 96 percent increase year over year (YoY).

In the six months of the current financial year, car sales have increased by 71 percent to 114,765 units.

IMC sold 6,214 units last month, a 2% decline month over month but a 55 percent rise year over year. Hyundai Nishat, which sold 762 vehicles last month, had a minor MoM rise of just 2% but a healthy YoY growth of 49 percent in sales.

Honda Atlas Cars Limited (HACL) sold 4,708 vehicles, a 56 percent rise month over month and a 167 percent increase year over year. At the same time, Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) set a new record for car sales, selling 15,503 units, an increase of 82 percent month on month and 104 percent year on year.

Due to higher interest rates on auto loans, a momentary price drop, and the launch of several new cars, the automobile industry saw a significant increase in demand in the preceding year. However, as the government and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) work out ways to handle the country’s massive import bill, demand is expected to fall in the coming days.
