Mohammad Rizwan, a Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman, has been signed by Sussex County Cricket Club for the major part of the 2022 season.
“Sussex Cricket is extremely pleased to announce the signing of Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan, who will join Sussex following Australia’s tour of Pakistan in early April,” the club stated in an official statement.
Rizwan would be making his debut appearance for Sussex or any English team. The right-handed batsman will participate in both the County Championship and the T20 Blast during his nearly three-month tenure, which will end in mid-July for the T20 competition.
The 29-year-old has had an outstanding cricket season. In T20I cricket, he has a total of 1280 runs, including a century and 12 fifties. He also broke Chris Gayle’s six-year record for most Twenty20 runs in a calendar year.
He also finished third in the last ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scoring 281 runs in six innings, and is now placed fourth among batters in the ICC T20I rankings.
Rizwan averages over 43 with the bat in red-ball cricket, including nearly 1,000 runs in 19 Test matches at an average of over 42.
When Pakistan last visited England in 2020, Rizwan was on a roll. The right-handed hitter averaged above 40 in the three-match Test series and was awarded Pakistan’s player of the series.
Former England captain and now cricket commentator Nasser Hussain praised Rizwan’s performance during the tour, calling him “the finest for a long, long time when it came to touring wicketkeepers.”
