General Syed Asim Munir takes over the charge of Pakistan Army as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022. Outgoing army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa handed over the command of army to newly appointed Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir at a ceremony held in General Head Quarters (GHQ) Rawalpindi.
General Qamar Javed Bajwa handed over the baton of command, the Malacca cane, an important part of the senior most ranked army officers, to General Syed Asim Munir, the new Chief of Army Staff. The ceremony started in GHQ at 10:00 hours with an army band playing National songs to pay tribute to the senior officials.
The former army Chief and General Asim Munir laid wreath at the martyr’s monument and offered prayer.
General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the outgoing Chief expressed his gratitude for being given an opportunity to serve the prestigious institution. He congratulated General Asim Munir on his selection as an army Chief.
He said that he is optimistic about the capabilities of the new command and expressed hope that newly appointed Chief of Army Staff will lead the nuclear country towards progress through his competent leadership. General Qamar Javed Bajwa acknowledged the services of General Syed Asim Munir and appreciated him for his achievements. He talked about the time that they have spent together in service that goes back to 24 years.
In his farewell speech, he mentioned that General Asim Munir is not just a Hafiz e Quran, but a professional and principled army officer and Armed forces would go a long way under his leadership.

Newly appointed COAS, General Syed Asim Munir was appointed on the rank of four star General on November 24, 2022. He was to retire on November 27, 2022, but for being the senior most army officer, he was on the list of nominees for COAS and was picked for the prestigious Post by Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Shareef and was approved by President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi.
General Asim Munir is not just a Hafiz e Quran, but he also won the sword of honour from the 17th course of officers training school in Mangla. He was previously serving as Quarter Master General at GHQ. He has served as DG military intelligence in 2017 and director General ISI later in 2018.
General Asim Munir belongs to a well-known religious family. His father served as a Principle of Tariqabad School in Rawalpindi Cantonment and he was a Hafiz e Quran as well.
