Pakistani celebrities Mahira khan and Ayesha Omar refused to endorse skin whitening products, similarly, other celebrities like Sanam Seed and Mohmina Mustehsan also rejected promoting such products.
The movement #BlackLivesMatter has at least made the discussion mainstream. There has been a discussion of George Floyd’s murder and the stereotypical thinking of society regarding skin color complexion in the South Asian community.
Concerning this issue, Zara Noor Abbas shared one of the related posts where she was criticized for being promoting fairness products which she tactfully responded to. But, Ayesha Omar and Mahira Khan said that they never promoted skin whitening products nor will they do it in the future.
Moreover, according to these celebrities, they had been offered for promoting whitening products to which both of these divas rejected for many years.
Entertainment journalist Haroon Rashid questioned on twitter, “This is a genuine question – can you name me Bollywood/Pakistani stars who have never endorsed a skin lightening product?” in the answer to which Ayesha Omar said, “Me! been refusing offers to endorse various skin whitening products for 12 years. Have a very strong stance against it.”

Momina Mustehsan also said, “Same here. Always turned down all fairness product endorsements,” Momina said. “The amount of melanin in your skin has nothing to do with how beautiful you are. If we ALL responsibly refuse whitening endorsements, it might cause a shift in the market. We have the power to change the narrative.”

Such remarks of our celebrities are heartwarming for many people and especially those who faced discrimination in their lives due to their skin color.
