As part of his intentions to create a virtual metaverse, Mark Zuckerberg has stated that his social media empire is developing the world’s fastest artificial intelligence supercomputer.

The metaverse, a concept that mixes the physical and digital worlds via virtual and augmented reality, will require “enormous” computing power, according to the Facebook creator in a blog post. According to Zuckerberg’s Meta business, the AI supercomputer, dubbed AI Research SuperCluster (RSC), is already the fifth fastest in the world.

AI is a computer programme that mimics the brain’s fundamental architecture and is capable of processing and finding patterns in massive volumes of data. Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and the WhatsApp messaging service, collects a lot of data from its 2.8 billion daily users.

The RSC, which is made up of thousands of processors and is kept in an undisclosed location, will assist Meta identify harmful information on its platforms, according to the Meta researchers. The metaverse, which Meta concedes is still years away from being a fully formed concept, is, nonetheless, an important aspect of the company’s computer plans. The researchers – Kevin Lee, a technical programme manager at Meta, and Shubho Sengupta, a software developer – said on their blog that they expected the supercomputer to interpret talks between gamers from various countries instantly.

The Meta employees claimed that it could permit large groups of people from all over the world to play a game based on augmented reality, in which a digital layer is imposed on reality, typically via a user’s phone, though special headsets and glasses are being developed by companies such as Apple and Snapchat’s owner.
