In an attempt to thaw strained bilateral relations, the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs in the National Assembly on Wednesday urged the reinstatement of high commissioners in both India and Pakistan.
A formal statement from the National Assembly Secretariat highlighted that the committee, chaired by Mohsin Dawar, had a thorough discussion on the recent trip of the foreign minister to India. The conversation emphasized that the foreign minister’s participation in the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) underscored the significance Pakistan places on regional peace, security, economic prosperity, and connectivity.
The panel was further apprised that member nations usually avoid using the SCO platform to address bilateral issues. However, Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto had to respond to the provocative remarks of his Indian counterpart on cross-border terrorism. Bhutto, in his retort, condemned any “unilateral and illegal actions by states in defiance of international law and Security Council resolutions”, actions that he argued were contrary to the objectives of the SCO.

Bhutto’s visit to India and the subsequent dialogue with his Indian counterpart have been seen as significant steps in the direction of regional peace and the reinforcement of bilateral ties between India and Pakistan. His participation in the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers also underlines Pakistan’s commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the region.
