Thar Coal Project would produce 2600 MW of electricity this year and it would be one of the key energy projects of the country, Federal Minister of Energy (Power Division) Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan said on Thursday.
People of Thar have the right to employment in the project and for this purpose, orders were issued to the relevant companies, Dastgir Khan said this while talking to the media during his visit to Thar Coal Block 1 and 2 and reviewed the power generation process.
The minister remarked that the poor and elderly people of Thar have seen huge miseries in the past; however, the incumbent government would provide health, education, and employment opportunities to their new generation.
He also claimed that the coalition government would give legal and constitutional rights to the people of the Thar region.

During the meeting, problems regarding the provision of electricity to the villages of Thar were also discussed and progress would be made in the coming days, sources reported.
The minister added that the Thar Coal Project would bring prosperity not only to the Thar region but also to the entire country.
Moreover, Khurram Dastgir reiterated that the Thar Coal project was initiated in 2014-15 by former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and now this project had been producing economical electricity for the people.
He cited that several projects had been successfully completed whereas some were in the last stages of completion. He went on to say that 2600 MW of electricity would be generated by Thar Coal Project during the current year which would be added to the national grid.
Earlier in June this year, Khurram Dastgir revealed that the government had decided to shift imported coal-based plants to Thar coal.
The government decided to create a working group between the federal and Sindh Governments to find modalities of provincialization of Hyderabad and Sukkir Electric Supplies Companies (HESCO– SEPCO).
